      The titular “cracked” operates on dual registers: on the one hand referring to a material fissure in a sound-object’s surface, out of which springs indeterminate effects; on the other, a site of rupture, directed towards the creative actualization of media potentialities. The bulk of the text (Ch. 2-3) is spent tracing the trajectory of expanded media playback, from its historical roots in the Futurist noise of Luigi Russolo, to its reconfiguration in the manipulated phonograph / turntable [...]
