Focused on an apparent birthday party, the action of the book develops for the reader through the memories and dialogues of the characters. The pace is fast and keeps you interested in what is going to happen or what has already happened - as it moves in time according to the thoughts of the main hero. A mix of exotic, self-introspection and trivia, the book would make a good read for holiday. Inspired by the life of Aristotle Onassis, it has enough surprises to keep you going.

In The Birthday Party, Panos Karnezis imagines the life of a Greek shipping magnate named Marco Timoleon (who bears more than a passing resemblance to Aristotle Onassis). The main action takes place over a single day. In his seventies, the still vigorous Timoleon is throwing a party to celebrate his daughter Sofia’s 25th birthday. This extravagant and gaudy event is set to unfold at his secluded estate on his private Greek island, with a massive cake imported from Vienna, a 21-piece orchestra, [...]

Obviously heavily inspired by the Onassis story, this book set during one day and one night of the life of the main character shows his past experience and adventures, through various flash back. At the same time, the plot advances towards a rather twisted ending. It's gripping, mean and yet full of love for these flawed characters and their petty scheming. Typical Karnezis, although there are possible comparisons with David Golder (Irène Némirovsky).

it was worth reading, its one of those books I need to read it all. clever telling of a story from multiple points of view and gradually exposing the real underlying reason for events going on at the birthday party. The gradual exposing got tedious near the end. He really could have stopped writing about 3/4 the way through.

What a surprising and wonderful read! I bought this on impulse last year as a summer beach read and was not at all disappointed. I think this author has a bright future. This book is richly imagined and beautifully drawn. Very evocative and quickly paced.

I enjoyed this book a lot. At first it begins with a simple premise such as 'let's make my insanely rich father angry on his own birthday' and later it becomes just the biggest prank imaginable. I had great time reading this and the plot twist just came out of nowhere.
