The thing about this story, the incredible wonderful thing about this story, is it's happy. It's hopeful. It's about being able to trust for the first time. Bright superheroes, y'all. Bright, gay, superheroes. Love it.

How to Piss Off a Failed Super-soldier by John Chu is a short story published by Book Smugglers last year. I bought it close to the release but only just got around to reading it. It's not very long — technically novelette length — and I easily read it in a single sitting. That's probably a longer blurb than strictly necessary for a story this short, so I'll skip my usual summary and jump to my thoughts. I liked how much of the worldbuilding, for lack of a better word, was implied rather than [...]

"You make decisions that would be perfectly rational if you were trying to escape from a POW camp."I've always been interested in the dark possibilities of "super soldier"ing, and this was a compelling exploration. It was also a compelling exploration of C-PTSD, and how trauma and anxiety affect interpersonal relationships. Review first posted on My Blog.Aitch was created to be a super soldier. From birth, he was treated more as an experiment than a person, tested on endlessly and trained to be the best. When Aitch finally escapes, the government wants to cover up what they were doing so the attempts on his life never stop. Now his brother, Jay, tells him there is a cure and he wants so much to believe but can he trust anyone, even Jay?Mr. Chu is a master at creating intriguing characters in well-crafted worlds in [...]

I'm honestly not even sure what it is that I've just read. I mean I DO but Not really? The story itself is okay, but the writing style is really weird and didn't work for me well. Too simplistic? Short sentences feel too abrupt and a little disjointed. My emotional involvement was practically nonexistent, mostly. It's just flat. So very very flat. Well, this was a letdown. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND

This was disappointing. I didn't enjoy the narrative style and I felt like I was missing information in order to fully appreciate the story.
