This is a wonderful book about Jim Henson which starts in his childhood and takes you on his journey and into the Jim Henson we all know. I liked how the Muppets were incorporated into the story, many that I loved in my childhood. The art is beautiful and also includes real photos of the cast members. This isn't just a kids book! Anyone who loves Jim Henson will love this book. 5*****

I am on a hunt for a good new board bookst this this book is a board bookbut the board books brought me to this biography. Which is fantastic.Finding a biography for younger reader can be challenging. It is either a picture book or a huge chapter book. This book hits right in the middle. It has fun illustrations with the right amount of information to keep a younger audience hooked. I was laughing all the way through it because the illustrator gives Jim Henson a beard as a child. There are lots [...]

Love, love, love Jim Henson and this book. I don't have kids, so I can't speak to how good it is for a particular age group, but it brought tears to my eyes. Sesame Street and The Muppet Show are the first TV shows I ever remember watching and my parents got HBO just so we could watch Fraggle Rock when it came out. I miss Jim Henson. He passed way too soon and I will treasure this little biography.

I Am Jim Henson was an informative read. It was fascinating to learn how Jim Henson was a born performer with a terrific sense of humor and to learn he was born and grew up in Mississippi. Jim Henson’s creativity was off the charts! He could take anything and make it into something. His grandmother played a big role in his life encouraging him to pursue art projects with no restraint then have him make-up stories about each protect. Author Meltzer did a great job in telling us all about Jim He [...]

Brad has an incredible way of taking wonderful historical characters and bringing them to life for young readers. Given my obsession with Henson, I've read through his biographies Brad doesn't a beautiful job of telling his story. If you have children spend some time with them in your lap reading this book. If you don't have children, spend some time reading yourself. It's beautiful.

First sentence: I am Jim Henson. Oh, good. You're here. What's the fun of a story if you don't have anyone to share it with? Premise/plot: I am Jim Henson is a picture book biography of Jim Henson. It begins in his childhood where readers learn that he loves laughing and playing pretend. He also loves "kooky" words. By the time he was a young teenager, Jim knew one thing: he wanted--he needed--to work in television. The rest of the book follows that dream. The book keeps things big picture, at l [...]

We love this new biography series for kids at our house. The illustrator draws Henson the same regardless of his age at that point in the story so it's amusing to see him with a beard and a mustache while still in grade school. The book, with its beautiful color illustrations, highlights the theme of Jim Henson's Muppets--that we all can be different and still get along. I want my children to know there was a man named Jim Henson who worked to make us happy. I miss him and his creative genius.Re [...]

Sweet and simple book, this would be great for a read-aloud to older elementary kids. The author does not mention that Jim has passed away, though kids can see it if they look at the timeline included on the last couple pages. One of my personal heroes and I'm always glad to see his story being told and shared.

I really enjoy these Ordinary People Change the Word biographies. The illustrations - which are a combination of real world illustrations along with cartoonized versions of the subjects - appeal to me, an avid comics nerd. I like the message of this one, but I could have used even more information about Jim and about his work with movies and his imaginative creature shop. It's a good start on a biography, with real pictures and a bibliography/further reading in the back.

My memories of Jim Henson go back to the early 1970s when I watched Sesame Street each morning with my mother. Big Bird was my favorite followed closely by Oscar the Grouch. I read The Monster at the End of this Book so many times that the cover fell off. All that was left was the golden spine desperately holding the messy and crinkled pages together. Like much of America, I watched The Muppet Show each weekend. The corny camp of muppets juxtaposed to the straight guy celebrity guest of the week [...]

I just hugged myself. Please read the end pages of the book, they make it SO much more delightful than it already is!

Absolutely adorable, well written, to the point, and wonderfully hopeful. I got this one for Christmas both because a) I'm working on a seminar on Jim Henson and, b) I'm me. If all of the ones in this series are this good, though, I may well dip into it again. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to attempt identifying all the characters in the group portrait.

    14. JoAnne

This book seriously made me SO HAPPY - much like anything Jim Henson did. We loved the illustrations and it was a perfect book to share my love of the creator of the muppets with my daughter. It was so much fun when she would recognize characters and now she knows about the man behind them. This is definitely a book I will now go out and buy.

Loved this book! Great introduction to Jim Henson for those who didn't grow up knowing who he was. I will admit I got teary-eyed at the end. I found myself thinking about what might have been if he had not passed away.

4.25 starsI was assigned to read this book for a committee I am not sure if I am the best person or the worst person to review this because "I LOVE THE MUPPETS"and I love Jim Henson's Humor. I am a Muppet fanatic from Sesame Street to The Muppet Show, to Fraggle Rock, to even Bear in the Big Blue House, I am MUPPET crazy! (Okay as a Muppet crazed person who frequently quotes The Great Muppet Caper , Muppets from Space and the New Muppet TV show were ridiculous.ter Jim diedwell, Lisa and Brian ju [...]

Several generations have been raised on Sesame Street and Jim Henson’s Muppets and this book is a delight to learn about what experiences Jim had as a child that helped shape him to create the highly successful Muppets. Jim was one of author Brad Meltzer’s childhood heroes and readers will note an extra boost of energy woven throughout the biography.Jim was raised in a family of jokesters, art creators, and with a grandmother who encouraged his storytelling. One of his favorite radio comedia [...]

A Muppet fan through and through--I could go on for days illustrating how much of an understatement that is--I saw this on the new book cart and of course HAD to read it. So much in there--I caught every single reference, joke, and inspiration and had to stop myself from crying multiple times. I didn't expect that from a children's bio, but I should have considering at age 7 1/2 I cried the morning we saw in the paper that Jim Henson had died. I am so grateful that like this book says, his story [...]

A small biography for kids about one of the most inventive people to have existed, Jim Henson. Henson was creator to puppets he called muppets and a show they frequented called Sesame Street.Kids are introduced to the kind and wondrous mind of Jim Henson. We see how he came with the idea of muppets, including his first muppet Kermit The Frog. He went to create movies that are family friendly and make shows that teach children to read, count, be imaginative and dream big. Those movies and tv show [...]

My kids and I have read several of the biographies in this series by Brad Meltzer and this one is our very favorite. To the point where I'm ready to buy a copy so we'll never have to return it to the library. It was fun to read together, as there are few shows that bridge the childhoods of two generations like Sesame Street does, and it gave us the sense that we have yet another experience in common despite being parent/child. I loved learning about Henson's background, and I especially loved th [...]

This is my favorite of the "I Am" series, mostly because I loved Jim Henson. It was interesting to see how he got his start and I love these books because they are written so simply yet cover a lot of information. The best part about this book is/are the illustrations. Wow, just amazing and so much detail. It's cute how in all of the books in this series, the main characters are drawn as kids. It's the same here, but Jim Henson has a beard and a mustache throughout the whole book which I thought [...]

“Keep believing and keep pretending.”“It’s not easy bein’ green.”“Mahna mahna, do-do-do-do-doot. Mahna, mahna.”Tell me you aren’t singing along? Jim Henson did that! Not only did he create enduring characters (Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, Bert & Ernie the list goes on and on), he gave us songs that endure and stick in our brains for ages – and then come immediately back to mind with a few notes hummed! This was a great introduction to his life while focusing on how hard wor [...]

This was a biography of Jim Henson the Muppet creator and how he came to this choice in life. The book is part of a series of books- Ordinary People Change the World. I loved the illustrations and the story of how he started liking movies and stories and recreating the movies he saw. Then he created a frog puppet and the Muppet show and the rest is history. Smaller size for easy handling and fun non-fiction.

I am not a fan of this series, but this one caught my attention. Is it because I love the Muppets? Perhaps this series is growing on me. Maybe this one is particularly well done? Regardless, this is one I'd use with students. I do wish the time line was proportional, not just evenly divided by the number of events!

    25. David L.

What a great book about a great guy! And the lessons we can all learn from Jim Henson are something we desperately need in these volatile times. Kids and adults will enjoy this book, just like we’ve enjoyed the Muppets all these years.
