On a Midnight Clear is a serviceable-enough, inoffensive, contemporary mystery/suspense novel, set in Colorado. The initial set-up? A private investigator is on vacation, gets lost in a snowstorm, walks to the closest residence - a cabin in the woods, and it just so happens he finds a dead body (in the first 20 pages). He also finds a child at the house, alone, on Christmas Eve. What we have here is not a failure of marketing or insufficient reach, it's a novel that's not actually very good. Hav [...]

This was my first book of Henry Hoffman and so I met Adam Fraley as he is heading to Colorado for a Christmas holiday. I immediately took to Adam as he came across as a caring and very intelligent man. As he stumbles onto a grizzly scene he attempts to solve a mystery. The main characters are just so likable. I was glad I was able to read this book in exchange for a review. This mystery is so well done and the story unfolds in a rapid manner that keeps you interested and entertained. I have some [...]

After losing his way on a snowy road. Private eye Adam Fraley sees a house lit up with Christmas lights.A child answers the door.Little does he know what lies before him. The murder, the crime and the criminal; money swindled from clients. He ends up with an unexpected gift.I won this Free book through First-Reads.

I received this book as part of the First Reads Program for a fair review.Overview: Adam Fraley’s vacation isn’t going as he expected. First, he got lost. Then he found a solitary girl at a cabin. What has he gotten himself into? And can he find a way to keep everyone safe?Likes: This isn’t so much a murder mystery. Yes, there is a dead body, but that isn’t the mystery. And Mr. Hoffman has a better belief on adoption than is usually seen nowadays. Conclusion: This is a nice little side- [...]

When reading Henry Hoffman's Adam Fraley mystery/detective books you forget you are reading fiction. Henry weaves his stories together like a fine cable sweater taking you through twists and turns mixing historical fact and regional history with a cast characters that keep you thinking about them long after you finish the books. "On A Midnight Clear" is Hoffman's third Adam Fraley mystery that takes place at Christmas time in Colorado ( I know what my "bookies" are getting for gifts this year!) [...]

I really enjoyed this mystery set in the beautiful Colorado Rockies. You are right there with PI Adam Fraley as he drives the mountain roads in a blizzard, and later on "black ice". I've been out there but in the summer. The author develops interesting characters; in addition to Adam I especially liked Carlita and Jolly. I hope to meet them again in a future mystery. I thought the story line of the plight of a child who lost her mother, the search for the killer and the hunt for buried treasure [...]

I received this through the Giveaway program. The private investigator, Adam Fraley is great, and I liked the two detectives, Carlita Perez and Vernon Jolly. The writing flows and the tension builds page by page. As the clues are discovered, on both sides of the investigation, you are able to follow the crimes as they intertwine. There are some surprises and some disappointments along the way. There were two points in the book where I was a bit confused; the delay in investigating the gifts and [...]

Adam Fraley left Kansas to visit a friend for the holidays. Traveling into Colorado was a rough ride due to a heavy snow storm. Adam lost his way and stumbled upon a lone cabin. Seeking directions he knocked on the door to find a seven year old girl home all alone. She said her mother had gone for a walk. When Adam went to retrieve firewood for the girl, he found her mother, hanging dead. He phoned the proper authorities and when they arrived he took off to meet his friend Reggie Fielding. Toget [...]

What would you do if you were lost in the mountains of Colorado in the snow? Since Adam went on vacation at Christmas to visit a friend, he can tell you. He lost his way and came upon a log cabin. When he knocked on the door, he finds a lively, smart seven year old girl who invites him in. While retrieving wood for the fire, Adam finds out why she is alone in the cabin. He ends up helping the local authorities with this mysterious case. This story has a few unexpected twists I never saw coming. [...]

**I received a copy of this book through the Firstreads Giveaways program.**I loved this book. Fast-paced and to the point. There is background information, but it is neatly tucked into conversations instead of long, boring passages of explanation with no other purpose. Thank you! I could honestly see this as a movie. Once I started, I could not put it down. It is short, but that lends to its beautiful, concise writing that tells the story without the pomp and circumstance. Very well done. I ho [...]

I received a copy of On a Midnight Clear through a giveaway. Thanks! This book was a well paced mystery with likeable characters, especially the main character, Adam Fraley. Scenes and action were depicted well. It was basically a good read, but there were a few things that didn't seem realistic. I doubted that a police force would so readily be willing to work with a civilian even if he was a PI. I also thought that a child would not be told that her father killed her mother unless there was mu [...]

I really enjoyed this short novel although it certainly has its flaws. First of all, COMMAS! (That's the English teacher in meLOL). Also, the friendship between two of the characters seemed way to convenient and didn't fit the plot. I hate to leave spoilers so I won't, but this relationship was too contrived and bothersome to me as a reader. But, the book hooked me right away, which I liked. I won this book from a giveaway at !

I really enjoyed reading this prize book. It held my interst and I finished it in record time for me. I would recommend this book. The crime and solutions take many twists and turns to reveal the true solution. Its one you never suspect. Friends and enemies the lines are blurred. Try it you'll like it!!!!

This review is being written for . This book was all I had expected. A very good crime story. The pace moved along quickly, the characterization was very good. The format was such that when I had a free 10 minutes to read I could move through to a stopping point. Excellent for a weekend read or, as I did, read in segments of free time.Worthy of your time.
