True tales of mistreatment, no matter how short or long, can be the hardest to read. The brief glimpse into the life of Michael is both simple and complex; an entire lifetime of hardship, stress, grief and love boiled down into the story of one year in his life. The simplicity of the novel allows the reader to finish the story without becoming overwhelmed, but the truth and facts of the story resonate beyond the ending of the book.

This was so sadPoor little guy. Saw his Dad electrocuted. Then, his Mom remarries, but the man is a jerk. Boy sent to a school, where he is abused physically & mentally. No one believed him, when he told of the abuse, until he was an adult.

I won a copy of this book through Goodread's Giveaways.I find it difficult to review memoirs, biographies, etc because the story is so specific to the person. I found the story to be moving but at the same time I felt it really just glossed over the surface of the story and didn't really delve into the true horror of the school. I feel like the author missed a really great opportunity to show how the horrors of the past helped shape the future.

What a horrific reminder that one event can change the course of an entire life. I truly hope that sharing his story has and will continue to help Michael find some sort of closure or lighten his heart from the burden he has carried.Great writing, Kendra. This story flowed so naturally that I felt like I was listening to a friend talk about his life. I could not put the book down.
