I am rating this as a kids book. Why is this a children's book as its spine label reads? Fans of Springsteen and this song may love it, but sooooo not a appropriate for young children. I am a children's librarian and am hesitant to put it out among our new books. Seeing that it is described as an adult book on the flap, I contacted the person in charge of our collection development to ask if it is mislabeled as JUV. Anyway, I sent it back to her to review and we will see. I am all about having p [...]

I sat down and read this along to the song Outlaw Pete and found it an absolute blast! I always found it a fun song, but reading the words to the fantastic artwork here added so much depth to it which is increased with Springsteen's afterword.I'm not sure how well this would work as a straight up picture book or to non Springsteen fans, but then I'm not sure that this is ever intended for them.

This is a graphic novel disguised as a picture book--don't judge this book by the cover or its illustrations. Outlaw Pete leads a dangerous life, beginning his career as an outlaw wearing diapers, robbing banks at 6 months. He wants to be seen and heard, but still settles down later in life. No more to tell without giving away the ending. The illustrations are really cool.Highly recommended!

I always liked this Bruce Springsteen song, and the Frank Caruso illustrations are perfect. Funny and cartoonish on some pages, and then absolutely beautiful on others (my favorite page illustrates the line “And as the snow fell he held their beautiful daughter to his chest”). Though it looks like a picture book I’d say probably not for kids, although older kids and teens might appreciate the blend of absurdity and tragedy in this tall tale.

This adult picture book is a treasure for Bruce Springsteen fans. I've always loved the song. It is a tale that has been born out of the Old West. There is some delightful whimsy about it, too (the diaper-clad baby Pete, an outlaw, even then). Love the illustrations. Now I can listen, sing along, and enjoy the visualisation. Can you hear me!

Fick denna av mamma i julklapp. Hon trodde det var en grafisk novell men visade sig vara en bilderbok. För att vara en bilderbok så blev jag förvånad över hur bra den faktiskt var. Illustrationerna är riktigt snygga och berättelsen med.

This review was originally written for The Baby Bookworm. Visit us for new picture books reviews daily!Hello, friends! Our book today is Outlaw Pete, written by Bruce Springsteen and illustrated by Frank Caruso. Using the lyrics of Springsteen’s song, Outlaw Pete tells the tragic story of the toughest and most fearsome gunslinger to ever roam the West.Pete is an outlaw from birth, no doubt about it. By six months old, he’d already spent three months in jail. He fears no lawman, shows no merc [...]

I am so glad I read this before putting it in my library. I picked this up at Dollar Tree thinking, "Wow! $1 for a hardback picture book, what a great deal!" This is NOT a children's book. If I had read the inside flap, I would have known that, but when books are that cheap, I tend to just throw them in the cart without much thought. I'm not sure what to do with this book now

I should preface this with the fact that since the 80s I've been a diehard Springsteen fan - the kind who travels to see his shows whenever convenient(the ultimate instance being a trip from LA to New York for the final six shows of the 1999-2000 tour, without a single ticket in hand and all shows "sold out" before I left, but that's a story for elsewhere). For today we merely express our interest in how a gifted songwriter steps out of the proverbial box in an unexpected way.[So the people that [...]

I thought this would be a children's book, but it is not. It was still a great book just something that I would not be able to read to young children.

Outlaw Pete is one of my favorite Springsteen songs so I was really excited to get my hands on this book. While I enjoyed it, mostly because it was exciting to see Pete's story matched with such great illustrations, I'm a little confused about who this book is for. Some parents will certainly balk at the murder scene and the violence, although it's not very graphic. Also, I thought this book seemed hard to read aloud. In my head it was great, hearing Springsteen's despairing wail ("CAN YOU HEAR [...]

Public library copy. I'd nitpick that the text from some pages from this children's book should have been colored in white or something other than black to allow easier reading. Besides that, the art was remarkable and sometimes sequential and musician Bruce Springsteen did a fine job weaving a folklore-ish tale that starts out silly and childish and then something more mature. I won't state it's not a children's book or a bad one, just something off beat and maybe something fans of the Boss wou [...]

Hard to describe what genre this book actually fits into as it's not a children's picture book (a few pages of a man with a knife sticking out of his chest has seen to that!) but it's also not really a comic or graphic novel. Instead, Caruso has rather beautifully depicted one of Springsteen's songs and brought it to life. And it works really well. Springsteen is a great storyteller with his music regardless, but it's really nice to see one of his song's in this format. A must for any Springstee [...]

It’s odd to find a picture book in the adult section of the library; which is the perfect place for this read since most parents would not want to share it with their young children. Frank Caruso beautifully illustrated this classic Bruce Springsteen song into a fun yet poignant read that The Boss’s fans will love. I do not know if this book is typically sold with a CD, since my library copy did not have one, but it should. When I “re-read” it while listening to the musical accompaniment [...]

Be duly warned: this is not a children's book! If you know this song by Bruce Springsteen, though, you would know that immediately. However, I had to have it, and I had to rate it 5 stars because it's a brilliant song (as are 99% of Bruce songs), and I loved the art. I may use it with my 6th graders, but not my 5th graders. It would be great to use in the upper grades, however. Be sure to share the Afterword with them. It's quintessential Bruce.

    18. Christopher Stevenson

Well that escalated from a cute childrens book to a rated R violent show down to a sad ending with an orphan crying for her father. Don't let the cover confuse you, this is definitely not for kids, which means I'd probably read it to my kids if I had any. Which I don't, and I'm sure many of you are happy about that.

    19. Lee

It was cute, but I didn't like how it needed an explanation at the end of the book.If I am a kid, I don't read a story and immediately look for an explanation. I'm reading it over and over for the mere enjoyment, and eventually the larger abstract themes end up bleeding into my general philosophy.

    20. Dr. Robin Markowitz

Great for kids, big and small! An illustrated children's book for all ages! Based on a Bruce Springsteen song. Recommended, in my opinion, for school age and above. Children too young for cowboy movies won't understand. Otherwise, it's great for almost anyone from 7 to 107. Enjoy!

    21. Blu

Apprezzabile solo dai fan di Springsteen e da chi conosce la canzone Outlaw Pete.Nota importante: non è per bambini, se lo avete trovato in quella sezione, è il libraio ad aver sbagliato!

    22. April Connelley

This is not a children's book even though that's where I found it at the library. Can't judge a book by its cover.

    23. Sean

Outlaw Pete a great rideThis is a beautiful blend of Bruce Springsteen and Frank Caruso artistic talents. A very enjoyable read. I loved it.
