Fact: When I read a great book, usually I immediately want to pick up another book and start reading it. When I read a book I don’t enjoy I find it very hard to start a new book.So let’s be completely honest. I did not enjoy EllRay Jakes Rocks the Holidays! and I would not recommend it. There is absolutely no reason for this to be set at the holidays. There’s a holiday concert. That’s it. And this holiday concert could just as easily be any type of school performance or talent show. Beca [...]

Elroy Jakes 'accidentally' insults his best friend, and he knows he'll have to make it right somehow. And, the 'somehow' is in the form of three challenges handed down by his on-again-off-again best friend. The third challenge gives Ellray a bad feeling, especially when the whole school and parents are watching. You see Ellray has been given the role of emcee at the Winter Wonderland Holiday program and during the program Ellray has to do something that will not only embarrass himself, but bring [...]

Christmas is coming and third-grader Ellray Jakes is pretty excited about that. In fact, that is almost all he can think about. But when his teacher, Ms. Sanchez, decides it is time to tidy up their cubbies and classroom, she lets Cynthia sort the class into working pairs, and that’s when the trouble for Ellray begins. He says he wants to work with Corey, that way they can continue the game they invented when Corey slept over Ellray’s house the previous Saturday night. But Cynthia pairs Ellr [...]

Although the book deals with bigger topics, including race and friendship, it still manages to keep a light and humorous tone and mostly reads like a standard middle grade series book. EllRay Jakes, however, is not your typical third grader. He sometimes seems surrounded by ideas that are a little big for him, but the author does a fairly nice job keeping complex topics on target for this age group.

First of all - I liked the reader of the story. (I listened to the audio book). I thought he did a great job. However, I had some concerns when I first started listening - mostly because Ellray sorted out a lot of things by gender. Girls do this; boys do that. And maybe that is the way 3rd graders think. But it did get better as the story went along. Ellray accidentally hurts the feelings of one of his good friends, Kevin. To complicate matters, he and Kevin are the only two "brown skinned" kids [...]

Ellray Jakes Rocks the Holidays by Sally Warner was a good book. I would not say it was the best book I've ever read but it was pretty good. I might try out the other books in this series to see how they are. Over all, this was an okay book that I would read again. This book explains the challenges Ellray Jakes has with his friends. All Ellray wants is to fit in and it is not that easy since he is only one of two African-American boys in his class. It is even harder when he insults the other boy [...]

I was a lucky winner of the audio cd here on . Found the book to be decent but can't say that it is one that I would want to listen to more than once. I will check out some of Sally Warner's other Ellray Jakes books though in the future, as it seems that the Ellray Jakes series gets some pretty good reviews.

This book is about a boy named Ellray who moves from San Diego to Oak Hill in California, which is a predominately white middle to upper-middle class community. He tries to fit in at school but has some difficulties.
