It happened at the same time in history that the USA and France and other countries were having their own political upheavals. Walker said it is ignored because it lost, but it has had a lasting impact like the others. The book is slow, and repetitive. If we are told that the Royal troops were cold, poorly equipped, hungry and exhausted by the high altitude once, we were told that about thirty or more times. If we were told that the Spanish leadership was bitterly divided into nasty personality [...]

An awkwardly written book about a fascinating and important subject. There is a great book here, somewhere, but this one is not, unfortunately, that book.

A very well written book about Tupac Amaru II and Micaela Bastidas rebellion, as indeed she had just a big part to play as Tupac himself. For someone such as myself who didn't know anything of that period in the Americas Charles F. Walker did a brilliant job. He has researched well all the details and waded through a lot of information but doesn't overwhelm the reader. The only slight objection I have is putting Tupac Shakur on the same level as Tupac Amaru. In my opinion it can't be done. I hav [...]

I enjoyed this book. I picked it up with the intention to learn more about Peru and its history, and this was a great starting point to an important event in Peru's history. The author wrote with a lot of care, and put a lot of conscientious thought into looking into the broad strokes of the rebellion, its effects, and the mentality of the various groups and players involved. I found this to be a great introduction to a part of Peru's history I knew absolutely nothing about. It was thoughtfully [...]

A very interesting subject, but the book is not engaging. Constant side references to past and future events, a superficial context for contemporary actors and offices, and repetition get in the way of a strong narrative.
