This isn't a book I would say is doctrinally oriented; it's simply a truthful story of the daughter of Ray Charles -- her spiritual struggles, her life struggles, and a God who lifted her up despite her imperfections. What a testimony of One who stays with us even when our thoughts are not His thoughts nor our ways His ways. Praise God!

Behind the Shades is an autobiography of Shelia Raye Charles, one of the daughters of the best-selling musical artist Ray Charles. Throughout the book, she opened up candidly about her estranged relationship with her father. She didn’t meet her father until she was fourteen years old. Her father was always driven by success and maintaining his business career. He was continually busy and he didn’t take the time to connect with his children enough. Shelia Charles resented her father and was v [...]

The moment I saw Sheila Raye Charles’ book in the queue, I immediately wanted to read it. She’s the daughter of superstar Ray Charles, and tells her story about being in prison, being neglected by her father and her road to redemption. There is a fine story in there; unfortunately, it was weighed down by too much of what didn’t matter to the reader. It’s a memoir, and Sheila Raye Charles is going to want to tell her story. Yet, the book got so long that I just wanted it to be over, and I [...]

Candid and honest, Sheila has produced quite a tome of her life. The book is large and full. Her faith in God is presented as a vital and real part of her life. Switching between her voice and the voice of her mother, she sheds light on her troubling relationships with her acquaintances, family, and especially with her famous father. She pulls out all the stops and shares openly about the difficulties in her life and her own poor choices that eventually lead to her incarceration. She paints a re [...]

She's more than a Ray Charles' daughterShe's more than a Ray Charles' daughterThis book is well written and the author does a wonderful job of telling us her story of how she overcame drug addiction, jail, and losing her children. She knows because she is the daughter of Ray Charles that some people want to read about him, so she wisely weaves him in by telling her mother's story (which she got from her mother's journal).Even though she is the daughter of Ray Charles, we quickly see she lived a [...]

It took me a minute to finish this book because I was not really interested in Sheila's life as I was her relationship with her father which was as it turns out not a great deal. She gave a little insight into Ray Charles, but because they didn't have a real relationship there was not much to tell. Ray Charles was based on this book hard when it came to his 12 children you learn that in this book.

The beginning of the book seemed okay, but as it went along it was much more about Sheila Raye and her religion. There was not much about the life about Ray Charles, which is what I had been hoping for. I actually decided not to finish the book.

I don't feel that Sheila Ray the daughter of Ray Charles really knew her father all that well. I feel that she wanted some fame and publicity. According to her book she spent very little time with Ray Charles her father. Pop
