I once knew a woman who was the modern day equivalence of Dorian Gray. When I met her, she was nearing her 53rd birthday but didn't look a day older than 35. She was the splitting image of a brunette Grace Kelly. Beautiful was, if even possible, the only word I can use to describe her. From afar or in passing, she looked as if she is the nicest person to ever walk the earth. She looked regal, striking, and sympathetic. But to my surprise, she was nothing like the princess. Her angelic face hid t [...]

This is my favourite book of all time. It is so wonderfully written, that I feel the need to underline sentences on nearly every page. And not only is the style of the writing amazing: the story itself is marvelous. To be forever young and beautiful has been a dream of many a man. Oscar Wilde made a story out of it that truly holds all genres in one. Furthermore, you can't help but to feel that you actually know the characters. Dorian Gray, whose change you can feel along with him inside you, Lo [...]

One of my favorites, this novel takes a look into the human psyche; specifically a beautiful young man named Dorian Grey. When a portrait is drawn of him, the painting accepts the hideous deeds done to his soul and physical appearance as its one. Dorian no longer has to accept responsibility for his actions or sins. A book of love, murder and the desire to remain forever young. Oscar Wilde is a brilliant author.

So you want to remain eternally young? This book will tell you an engrossing moralistic tale that paints the picture of where the deadly sin of vanity can take you. It will take you into a descent into a hell full of shadows where the light will never touch you. This is a classic dark tale of intrigue. It is filled with the depths to which the human condition can sink. It is a page turner, but it may leave you feeling empty at the end. That is what it did for me. Nevertheless, it is a haunting bo [...]

The Picture of Dorian Gray: 5 starsThe Happy Prince: 3 starsThe Birthday of the Infanta: 3 starsLord Arthur Savile's Crime: 4 starsAvg. rating: 3.75 stars, rounded up to 4.

My review of The Picture of Dorian GrayI really enjoyed the three stories. They were very well-written, interesting, and even funny at times.

I'll follow the example of fellow reviewers and break up the stars:Dorian Gray: 5 stars (more like 5 million stars)The Happy Prince: 4 starsBirthday of the Infanta: 3 starsLord Arthur Savile's Crime: 3.5 starsSo on average, roughly 4 stars for the whole book.******Spoilers:The Happy Prince is a fable about the importance of compassion and the sacrifice that usually comes with it. I loved the moral! The Birthday of the Infanta was a sort of uncharacteristic work of Wilde's. I tried to read between [...]

This is my first time reading this since high school and it's definitely more misogynist and anti-Semitic than I recallBut, you know, still funny and insightful. Would watch Dorian Gray's reality television show.

Sometimes, a book and I cross paths with a serendipitous sense of timing. It's a magical, sublime thing when that happens because I love being dazzled with literary perfection and achingly personal relevance while pretending like my life really is a grand-scale movie script where things actually make sense in a deus ex machina sort of way. I like it when life validates every overly romantic notion I have about getting lost in a mighty good story. And then I sometimes stumble upon a dud of a readi [...]

I really don't understand why it took me so long to finish this book.Wilde sure knew how to write great stories.

-On The Picture of Dorian Gray: Dear Professors and Instructors who have thus far withheld this classic from my literary education: you are all bastards. This book embodies all that I love about literature and language. Dorian Gray is an angelic youth in Victorian London, who captivates Basil Hallward and Lord Henry Wotton with his fine looks and overall innocence. A portrait by Basil is commissioned, and Dorian absently wishes he could preserve the portrait's beauty in himself. His wish comes t [...]

I really, really loved this one. Every page had something quotable and thought provoking. I loved the characters --their ticks and quirks. I love the underlying theme of this story. It's definitely something that has left an impression on me, and I love that in a book. Beyond expectations.

    15. Bridgett

This is the type of story that catches you off guard. There is a huge turn. You don't expect anything. You have big hopes in the beginning and then they slowly start to deteriorate as the story progresses. This is the type of story that I would recommend for someone who is slightly melancholic. It is a solemn read. There is much sadness. It causes you to search into the depths of your soul as the main character does. The narrator is third-person but has a deep look into the mind of the main char [...]

This book was absolutely stunning, it was a shame it didn't contain any of Wilde's poetry or De Profundis but other than that this book was wonderful. The beautiful purple cover with the patterns and gold pages just made this a pleasure to read, I enjoyed picking this up and the feel of it. The only downside to this is obviously I can't fit this in my handbag, but collection books are supposed to go in handbags so I'm being a little petty.Wilde is a phenomenal writer and it was a shame his life [...]

An entertaining marriage of the gothic and the decadent, two genres that often overlapped, just never before with quite so many witticisms. Wilde's prose is deliriously easy to read, skating along on a shiny surface of rapid-fire exchanges and facile summaries of the fin-de-siècle worldview, but there are certainly some intriguing things going on beneath that surface. The link between outer beauty and inner beauty, so beloved by the Renaissance, is reexamined but not necessarily disproven, just [...]

4.25/5 StarsFirst off, I fell in love with Oscar Wilde's works when I first saw The Importance of Being Earnest when I was 13. So why not finally sit down and read the rest of his works?Since this novel was a collection, I shall be breaking this review into parts.Part One: The Picture of Dorian GrayThis book did not begin how I thought it would. Since it is such a well known classic, I thought I would begin with Dorian Gray already knowing about the painting. Instead, it started with him being a [...]

Initially, I did not want to read this book, and I opted to read Sense and Sensibility instead since I was more familiar with Jane Austen. But earlier in the year, my best friend told me great tales about this classic, so I decided to give it a shot.“Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry what the world thinks me: Dorian what I would like to be- in other ages, perhaps.”Oscar Wilde based his three main protagonists from the three different depictions of himself. As one explores his l [...]

Oscar Wilde is one of the funniest, most sarcastic writers of all time. He's always been one of my favorites. The Portrait of Dorian Gay is the first novel of his I've read. I knew from reading quotes by him that he's wickedly sarcastic, but I did not expect this story to have such a strong and positive message. In it, Wilde is condemning narcissism. Dorian is self-obsessed with his life and his luxuries. As Henry says, Dorian makes his life into a work of art. But in the introduction, Wilde war [...]

I'm really not sure why a lot of people have not read this. It truly is a work that can only be appreciated when read and reread. This is my second time reading through the pages that Wilde weaves with this epigrams and curious cascading delight for words. Each sentence is as interesting and beautiful as the last as he speaks of sin conveyed in the most interesting of manners.Truly, Dorian is a fall from grace. A Lucifer that could have looked upon what he would become if he had the choice. Perh [...]

This books tells the story of Dorian Grey a handsome and rich young man who at the beginning of the book has his portrait painted by Basil Hallward, a local artist. After meeting Lord Henry and consequently becoming considerably more vain, Dorian pronounces a wish that the portrait would be the one to age while he himself stayed always young and handsome. The rest of the story relates the slow and total corruption of his character through terrible acts. And as he wished it, Dorian Grey finishes [...]

Review by Jason LushOne hundred and ninety pages of political masturbation disguised as a supernatural suspense story. Of the three main characters we have; Dorian Gray, who is a brainless puppet the personifies vanity; Basil Hallward, the artist who painted the fabled portrait and represents the sorrowful conscience; and Lord Henry Wolton, who is the quintessential 19th Century fop whose sole purpose in the book is to act as Wilde's voice on politics, religion and homosexuality and as a driving [...]

Wow Oscar Wilde!! I always vaguely knew of this classic, but not the fine details of the story. Completely intricately written. I admit, I got a little bored reading it, especially the nine chapters or whatever about jewels and stuff. Altogether, I thoroughly enjoyed this read and was satisfied upon completing the novel. Anyway I felt obligated to read this, because when my English class did it, I was not in the country. Maybe I missed a big point by not having literary discussion on it. What al [...]

The literary content of the book was awesome. very introspective. the whole book is about dorian gray finding out how horrible of a person he is. the reason i give this book a three is because I found it quite boring. there really was never a story. My husband loves this book and thinks it is genius. I on the other hand am glad I read it but, it just had too many chapters where it just talks about how dorian gray like jewelry or music. It was just all over the place and didn't keep me intirgued [...]
