BLECCH. Let me give you a taste of this novel: "They had loved each other and hated each other, but now they had come full circle. And this was the forgiving." There is nothing here that is not a complete soap opera. It is all unbelievable, unreal, and boring. Galton hypes up the melodrama with the kidnapping scene. Vanessa is really dumb enough to leave Isobel with Richard? Then, after being locked in the room with him all night she quietly hands the baby over to Garrin and submits? Why wouldn' [...]

Published: 21/07/2012 (first published 2007)Author: Della GaltonRecommended for: fans of romance novels/ chick litEdition: KindleI found this novel on the Kindle Store for free and so I thought that I would give it a try. I thought that this was a very well written novel which contains great descriptions of the characters, their feelings, the settings and surrounding which makes it feel more realistic and makes you feel like you are there with them watching everything unfold. This is the first b [...]

Excellent romantic novel. Worth reading. Della's characters are well drawn. Helter Skelter would also appeal to horse lovers and those who want to revisit the romance of the fairground. It is a meatier romance compared to Della's first novel, Passing Shadows.

The story is about Vanessa, a young woman who used to work in a fairground. She has been through both betrayal and tragedy, and is currently married to someone supposedly solid and reliable. I thought the plot was well crafted. Although the outcome is inevitable, there are developments that I was not expecting, and it makes a good light read. I found Vanessa quite believable, if naive at times. However I found it difficult to believe in her husband, who becomes increasingly more unpleasant throu [...]

This is a great story, beatifully written. Della Galton writes characters with flaws that the reader can understand and forgive (well, most of them, anyway!). As the title suggests, Vanessa's life is full of twists and turns that keep the interest to the last page. Garrin is wonderfully moody and sexy. Richard is just awful. There is a great balance of laughter and tears - sometimes on the same page. I took this on holiday with me and finished it in less than a day. This is the first of Della's [...]

This is a fabulous read bursting with deep bright colours - the fairground, a tragic bereavement, horse riding, a gypsy curse, guilt, betrayal, lust and love - it's all in there!Della Galton teases us with a flawed hero and a likeable villain in such an even handed way that, like the heroine Vanessa, we take our time deciding which is which. We travel on a roller coaster ride of emotions, revisiting a painful past and getting embroiled in a helter-skelter of dramatic twists and turns until at the [...]

When Vanessa suspects her husband is being unfaithful, she returns to her roots only to discover the fairground where she was raised has gone and in its place is a new development of luxury apartments. She meets up with the man she abandoned – now a successful but unforgiving horse trainer. Helter Skelter is a multifaceted love story where emotions, tempers and frailties, run deep. Nicely drawn characters with an interesting backdrop of horse shows.

I don't read a lot of chick lit, but I do enjoy the occasional peek into women's magazines, and Della Galton's short stories are always good 'uns. This longer work was a satisfying quick read, with just the right mix of comedy and emotion, and an unusual background. (It's also set in the area where I grew up, which added an extra dimension for me.)Do also read the Writer's Toolshed guides for short story and novel writing!

I would have rated this 3.5 stars. Entertaining chick lit read following a typical formula. An easy read although the addition of horses, show jumping and stable yards wasn't that appealing for me - I skipped those pages.

An enjoyable read with realistic characters. The problems were resolved a little too simplistically though and it lost a little bit of realism because of that. Nevertheless it was an enjoyable, easy read.
